Technical Details on MAN Engine Variants
For operators sourcing spare parts for standby generators or continuous industrial power supply, the D2840 LE301 is the right choice. This V10 from the MAN D28 series is built for exactly this purpose: continuous operation at constant speed, typically 1,500 or 1,800 rpm in generator mode.
The purely mechanical injection is not a drawback here. It makes the LE301 easier to maintain than electronically controlled variants and provides high tolerance for varying fuel quality across different operating regions. No load spikes, no variable load profiles. That is reflected in service life.
With 440 to 540 kW, the LE301 is built for what it does every day: steady load, fixed speed, long running hours. A reliable and durable diesel engine for demanding continuous applications.

At MOTEX, spare parts for the D2840 LE301 are permanently in stock. Our team has been working with this engine for over 30 years and assists with parts identification even when only the serial number is available.
The MAN D2840 LE401 sits between the stationary LE301 and the performance-oriented LE403. With 600 to 735 kW and a speed range of 1,500 to 2,300 rpm, it operates flexibly: in marine propulsion as well as in industrial high-load systems.
Unlike the LE301, the LE401 is not designed for a fixed generator speed. It can handle variable loads and is therefore suited for applications where load fluctuates or the engine is called upon across different operating points. Depending on the configuration, electronic injection (EDC) is used, enabling more precise control and better efficiency under varying conditions.
Its torque of up to 3,000 Nm makes it the right tool for marine applications with medium power demand and for industrial plants where more output is needed than the LE301 can deliver, but the full LE403 power is not required.

For the D2840 LE401, we supply spare parts worldwide, whether as a single part or a complete repair kit. On request, we also advise on whether an overhaul is more economical than replacing the engine.
The MAN D2840 LE403 is the maximum that can be extracted from the V10 block of the D2840 series. With up to 820 kW and optional twin-turbo charging, it operates at the performance limit of the V10 platform. Those needing more move to the D2842 with V12 technology. Those wanting the most from a compact V10 layout have their answer here.
Compared to the LE401, the LE403 introduces revised charging technology, sometimes as a twin-turbo configuration, and depending on the version, a full electronic engine management system (EDC). This gives the engine sharper response and more consistent power delivery across the entire operating range. In marine main propulsion, where on-demand power consistency matters, this is noticeable.
For operators who know their D2840 setup and run it for many years, the LE403 represents a clear performance upgrade within the same engine family. Parts knowledge and service overlap heavily with the other D2840 variants.

Where the D2840 series reaches the limits of V10 technology, the D2842 begins. The LE103 is the base variant of the V12 engine, delivering significantly more power reserve than any D2840 variant with 21.9 litres of displacement and up to 1,000 kW.
The step from 10 to 12 cylinders is more than just added displacement. The V12 layout provides a more even firing interval and smoother running, which has a direct impact on bearings, the crankshaft and overall service life during long operating hours in marine vessels and generator sets.
Despite its power class, the LE103 has a mechanically straightforward design. It is suited for operators moving from the D2840 platform to V12 power without immediately needing the most complex configurations. A solid entry point into MAN's 12-cylinder class.

MOTEX supplies spare parts for the D2842 LE103 worldwide. We know the typical wear points of this series from practical experience and advise on overhauls and parts enquiries directly, without detours.
The MAN D2842 LE201 is built for equipment that runs under heavy load every day. With up to 1,100 kW and 3,800 Nm, it sits in the mid-range of the D2842 series, covering the spectrum between the LE103 base version and the LE301 top model.
What sets the LE201 apart is its broad application profile. It is used both in marine main drives with varying voyage profiles and in generator sets running continuously under load. The V12 arrangement delivers particularly smooth power output, which has a positive effect on bearings, the crankshaft and all connected systems.
Depending on the configuration, the LE201 uses mechanical or electronic injection. In EDC variants, load control is more precise and fuel consumption under partial load is noticeably lower, which becomes economically relevant over long operating periods.

For the D2842 LE201, MOTEX keeps commonly requested spare parts in stock. For less common parts or specific configurations, we organise procurement quickly through our network.
With up to 1,200 kW and 4,000 Nm, the MAN D2842 LE301 is the most powerful variant in the D2842 series. In this power class, it operates as the main drive in ships, as the propulsion engine for large generator sets and in heavy-duty industrial applications where less powerful variants simply fall short.
The LE301 is not an everyday engine for moderate requirements. It was designed for sustained high-load operation. Reinforced crankshafts, oversized bearings, charging technology tuned to the upper end of the performance range. That makes it durable where other engines would reach their limits sooner.
With electronic engine management (depending on the version), power delivery can be precisely controlled, an important factor in complex multi-engine drive systems or plants with automatic load management.
